National Community Action Month

NATIONAL COMMUNITY ACTION MONTH

MAY 2011

In recognition and celebration of National Community Action Month, PRIDE Community Services is sponsoring a series of events and celebrations. The events are aimed at highlighting PRIDE’s work, mission and the impact that Community Action has on its community. The following is a listing of dates and event descriptions:

May 2nd National Community Action Celebration

National Community Action Month was created by the national office of the Community Action Partnership to highlight Community Action Agencies’ role helping low-income families achieve economic security. This event will include a reception at 10:30am with a Proclamation signing starting at 11:00am. The Proclamation will include Congressman Nick Rahall, Mayors of Logan, Chapmanville and Man and other elected officials. There will be a live radio broadcast by WVOW Radio.

May 7th Pro Wrestling Event—Chapmanville Community Center

This is planned as a fundraising event for PRIDE Community Services.

May 12th Poverty Simulation—Word of Life Church

This is a powerful simulation that forces you to look at poverty and the people facing it in a completely different light. The event is designed to put a "face" on poverty and to encourage people to take action to help fight poverty in their communities. It is sure to make you better appreciate at least one aspect of your life. Registration information coming soon.

May 19th Family Fun Day—Chief Logan State Park

Annual event sponsored by PRIDE’s Head Start Program.

May 20th Senior Picnic/Millcreek Senior Center Summer Opening

This event will take place at the new Millcreek Senior Center and will include a pig roast for the seniors. We are also calling this event the Millcreek Summer Opening because the open-house at the opening in January was hampered by the weather.

May 25th National Senior Health and Fitness Day

More than 1,000 local organizations in all 50 states will be celebrating the 18th annual National Senior health & Fitness Day. The common goal for the day: to help keep older Americans healthy and fit. Always set for the last Wednesday in May, national Senior Health & Fitness Day is the nation’s largest annual health promotion event for older adults.

May 26th Employee Appreciation Event—Chief Logan State Park
